UNDAKAN KAWRUH, The Stack of Knowledge
Undakan Kawruh which translates to “Stack of Knowledge,” is a university campus design in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, inspired by the classic visual experience of books and papers stacked on a study desk. This concept serves as a metaphor for the incremental and meticulous process of acquiring knowledge, with each sheet of paper representing a step in the journey of learning.
Undakan (The Stack): The term “Undakan” refers to both the literal and figurative idea of a stack. In our design, this concept is reflected in a welcoming pilotis area that functions similarly to a traditional Javanese “pendopo”—a large, open, column-supported space without walls. This area is designed to blend public and private spaces, enhancing the mixed-use ground floor that includes commercial areas, coworking spaces, and rental offices. By blurring the lines between public and private, these spaces are made more accessible and engaging to the public, facilitating interaction and activity.
Green Undakan: The “Green Undakan” in front of the building is a grassy, commercially-oriented hill that also serves as a public park. This feature underscores the campus’s commitment to contributing green space to the city of Semarang, enhancing the urban environment and providing a valuable recreational area for the community.
Kawruh (Knowledge): The “Kawruh” aspect of the design reflects the diversity and fluidity of knowledge. Inspired by the characteristics of paper—its ability to bend, its textures, its translucency, and its various forms—the design aims to symbolize the diverse and evolving nature of academic pursuit. Each element of the design embodies the ongoing exploration and learning across different fields, echoing the dynamic and multifaceted nature of education.
Undakan Kawruh not only embodies the essence of learning through its architectural form but also enhances the community by integrating functional spaces with a commitment to green, public areas. This project represents a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, aiming to foster an engaging and vibrant educational environment.
