Talawang Bumi embodies the spirit of Tanjungpura University’s commitment to advancing its campus and activities while maintaining a harmonious balance with nature and preserving cultural heritage. The design is inspired by the Talawang, a traditional Dayak shield, and incorporates the distinctive Malay roof trusses made from Ulin wood. These elements are supported by a structural framework reminiscent of traditional stilt houses found in West Kalimantan. The gateway features three peaks constructed from multiple vertical wooden poles, representing the Tri Dharma of higher education. This symbolizes the collaborative effort required from diverse institutions, cultural backgrounds, and all segments of the Pontianak and West Kalimantan communities.
The shield represents the ethos of preserving both nature and culture. The horizontal placement of elements reflects the spatial context and draws inspiration from the massing of various traditional West Kalimantan houses.
The Tri Dharma of higher education is interpreted through three peaks of wooden poles, each varying in size, and supported by numerous additional poles. This configuration highlights the need for collective effort and mutual cooperation among different campus elements, government bodies, industries, cultural groups, and other community stakeholders.
The design draws from traditional architectural precedents of West Kalimantan, including: wooden structural frameworks, stilt-based construction, horizontal massing, sloped roofs, and intricate Malay roof details.
