“Nyongsokng Tembawang,” which translates to “Welcoming Guests with Open Hands” in Dayak, is a project that celebrates unity and environmental preservation. This project won the design competition with a concept that integrates diverse functions and cultural heritage into a harmonious whole.
This project is a multifunctional cultural center that includes an auditorium, commercial spaces, convention areas, exhibition halls, artist residences, an open-air theater, an open-air cinema, an FnB center, offices, a mosque, and a library. With the overarching theme “To Preserve Nature and Culture,” the design aims to honor and sustain the cultural and ecological values that have long been cherished.
Vision and Implementation
The core concept of this project draws from the history and culture of the Dayak people, who have a deep connection with the tembawang forest—a customary forest that plays an integral role in their social and ecological life. Centuries ago, the tembawang forest was a place where the Dayak and Malay communities supported and shared with each other. It symbolizes the brotherhood and collaboration between different ethnic groups.
To embody this spirit, we removed boundary fences and created a boulevard that links the entire complex. Parking is centralized in a rear area with a new parking structure, allowing visitors to access the main buildings seamlessly. This design considers accessibility for both pedestrians and individuals with disabilities, ensuring ease of use for all.
Key Features
